As a motion designer on the UX team at BlackBerry, I worked primarily on the out-of-box experiences for the BlackBerry 10 product line. During this time I was named inventor on a patent for my contributions to the BlackBerry 10 bootup experience.
The BlackBerry 10 bootup experience was the first of its kind. No other mobile OS at the time was in any way interactive while the operating system was booting up. With the Brand and Marketing team as a key stakeholder, and paying homage to the classic BlackBerry trackpad shape of previous generations, I designed the bootup loader using the classic BlackBerry squircle shape. As the system loads the squircle would fill up, and upon touch it would display the percentage loaded. The fact that the BB10 OS was fluidly responsive while it was booting up was a testament to how well optimized it was.
I led the motion design efforts for the Retail Demo App which would be running on working devices on display in retail stores. I worked closely with the Brand and Marketing team to ensure the experience was aligned with the BlackBerry brand. The idle screen animation was designed to be an invitation to try out the new BlackBerry 10 device, while also introducing the customer to the new core gesture to swipe up.
As a way to connect on a more personal level with our customers, I designed a welcome wrap for the BlackBerry Z10 device to be included as part of the packaging.
